NO ON PROPOSITION 8

That’s the topic of our October 2008 meeting, and an important one it is. The California Supreme Court ruled that the California Constitution prohibits the denial of marriage to same sex couples. Equality takes another step forward. Unfortunately, there are always those who think their world view is the only one which is right – in this case, far right. As a result of the efforts of these folks, Proposition 8 is on the ballot for November 4, 2008. This would eliminate the right of same sex couples to marry and forbid California to recognize same sex marriages lawfully created elsewhere.

The Meeting Agenda will include a viewing of an episode of In the Life: Civil Rites & Civil Rights. See the description of this awe-inspiring video below.

Also joining us will be the Rev. Craig Scott. Rev. Craig Scott was ordained as a Unitarian Universalist minister in January 2005. He is beginning his fourth year as minister of the UU Fellowship of Tuolumne. He serves on the Board of the Action Network of the California Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry, which has a history of working for gay and lesbian rights and for marriage equality for all. His wife, Karen Paull, practices law with the California Public Utilities Commission, in San Francisco. They have two daughters and one grandson, with another on the way.

Last, but not least will be Kim Jones, Diversity Outreach Manager &, Senior Field and Policy Coordinator for the Western Region, PFLAG National. Kim will be speaking on Proposition 8 and organizing a phone bank for those who are interested and willing. If so, bring your cell phone. Kim will provide everything else you need.

 Civil Rites & Civil Rights

The 17th Season Premiere episode of IN THE LIFE, Civil Rites & Civil Rights, takes an in-depth look at the journey to marriage equality in America's most populous state, and the real possibility that this newly gained right could be erased with the passage of the Proposition 8 referendum in November. In A Conversation With…., Jonathan Capehart, Pulitzer Prize editorial writer at The Washington Post talks with Julian Bond, Chair of the NAACP about the intersections of gay rights, civil rights, and marriage equality. The episode concludes with Mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco presiding at the nuptials of Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, long-time partners and activists, who after more than 50 years together could finally say, "We're married." Sadly, Del passed away just over two months later on August 27, and IN THE LIFE is honored to be able to present this season premiere episode "In Memoriam" to this accomplished woman.
